Gem Munro - Amarok Society Posted on Apr 26, 2016 Gem Munro, Amarok Society spoke to our club on April 25, 2016. It was incredibly inspiring and hopeful. Did you know there are 70 million primary school aged children who are too poor to afford an education? The Amarok Society teaches uneducated mothers how to read and write, and then teaches the mothers to be neighbourhood teachers – educating their own and their neighbours’ children every day in their homes, with astonishing results. To find out more about the Society, visit New Members - April 18, 2016 President Julie Cuglj (centre) was pleased to welcome 2 new members to our club at our lunch meeting on April 18. Blair Davidson introduced Rick Evans (2nd from right) and John Lark introduced Rong Chuan Wu (2nd from left). Rick is a chartered accountant, specializing in business evaluation. Rong is the Taipei Ambassador to Canada. Congratulations to both! Meet and Greet - Syrian Family Our Syrian refugee family has been settling in Ottawa. This past week, the three eldest children started school, allowing Mohamed and Shooga to start their English language classes. Earlier today, the family came to Christchurch Cathedral to meet their Rotary and church sponsors. It was a wonderful event. A highlight was a heartfelt thank you from the family read by Mohamed and translated by Rotarian Rouba Al-Fattal. Rotary Cocktail Reception in Aid of Syrian Refugees The Rotary reception succeeded beyond our expectations! Besides having a distinguished keynote speaker, the Assistant Deputy Foreign Minister, Ms. Alexandra Bugailiskis, and a Syrian refugee family Al-Dakhil share their inspirational story, we were humbled that Mayor Jim Watson joined us, and that Minister John McCallum paid us a surprise visit to show his support for the work of the Rotary Club and the Syrian refugees! Our thanks to all the diplomats, guests, musicians, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who made this an amazing event! Click the link for more pictures... Read more...
